Jos Verstappen Pit Lane Refuelling Fire

The Early Days of Refuelling

Nobody Injured in Dramatic Pit Lane Fire

Refuelling was introduced in the 1982 by the Brabham team when they discovered they could start a race with half empty tanks stop to refuel and gain time by running a lighter car.

By 1984 however refuelling had been deemed unsafe and was banned.

It was reintroduced in 1994 however when a system was devised that was deemed safe enough to use in a pitlane packed with mechanics.

The system was not foolproof however as can be seen from the video. Thankfully no-one was injured in this incident.
