This incident happened at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.
Schumacher started on pole while Montoyoa joined him on the front row. On the start Schumacher in the Ferrari goes for the inside line while Montoya in the Williams BMW tries to go round the outside.
If Montoya could hold it he was on the right side for the next hairpin bend. But the 2 cars collide. Schumacher loses his noses and Motoya loses momentum. Schumacher pits for a new nose while Montoya finishes the first lap in 11th place.
Montoya climbed up to 6th position before the being the first F1 driver to be penalised for "having caused an avoidable collision".
Montoya was furious as you can hear in the video.
Montoya's thoughts on the incident: "I was on the outside of the corner and I left Michael enough room to get through, but his car understeered and he ran in to me and that's it. Sure I didn't leave him much room because I didn't want to be on the dirty side of the track, but he could have got through. I didn't expect him to brake, he's a racing driver, but I didn't expect him to drive into me. It was just an accident, that's all, I don't see why I should get a penalty."
While Michael said: "He squeezed me and I didn't really have room to get by. This penalty doesn't seem justified. We have seen people get away with worse without being penalised. There doesn't seem to be any consistency on how these sanctions are applied. That should be changed."
